The core of ACE consists of Carina, Este, Annemi, and Ariella, but due to the various diverse commitments of these core members, it is often necessary to for one or more of our regular stand-in members to perform. Please be assured that the sound quality and image of ACE is in no way affected when working with our extra members!
Gabriele von Durckheim, principal flute of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, received her first flute lessons from Eva Tamassy, and after finishing her Higher Licentiate at the University of Stellenbosch, continued her studies in England from renowned Flautist Trevor Wye. She is currently completing her M.Mus at the University of Stellenbosch under Bridget Rennie-Salonen.
Gabriele has won several prizes and awards including Category prize of the ATKV Musiq competition and Oude Meester Music Competition, and performs regularly as soloist and ensemble player. She has also been a member or several orchestras, including the renowned Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and the South African National Youth Orchestra.
Anjulie de Vos-Nock is a classically trained cellist and received her B.Mus – degree at the University of Stellenbosch in 2001. She completed her studies under Magdalena Roux (University of Stellenbosch), Anmari van der Westhuizen (University of Stellenbosch) and Andreas Pozlberger (Bruckner Konservatorium Linz, Austria).
While still studying she performed regularly with the Cape Town Philhamonic Orchestra, Kwazulu Natal Philharmonic and St George's Chamber Orchestra. She has also performed and recorded with famous artists such as Stef Bos, Koos Kombuis, Valiant Swart, Louis Mahlanga, Heinz Winkler and the Springbok Nudegirls. Today Anjulie performs on a regular basis and teaches music at Somerset College and privately.Anjulie was also one of the founding members of the popular cosmopolitan quintet, Zamar, in which she played cello and stick bass up to December 2006. She also composed many of the songs played and sung by Zamar. Anjulie now works as freelance cellist / bassist.
Magdalene Minnaar (violin / viola) received an Honours degree in music with distinction from UCT in 2005. While studying, she was active as chamber and orchestral violist, notably with the all-woman Muse String Quartet and the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra. She was also the leader of the UCT Symphony Orchestra and UCT String Ensemble’s viola section. She was born and raised in Pretoria where she attended Pro Arte arts school and was an enthusiastic and passionate musician from an early age. She played violin and bassoon in various orchestras (including the National Youth Orchestra) and sang in various choirs (including TRUK’s opera choir and the National Youth Choir where she was a soloist in 1997 and 1998).
In 2004 she won the vocal category of the ATKV Musiq competition and later that year also won the Chisholm Centenary competition. For three consecutive years (2004-2006), Magdalene won the prize for the best performance of a South African work at the ATKV Music competition. In 2005 she appeared on national television in the drama ‘Known Gods’ and was also a prizewinner in the UNISA National Voice Competition. In 2006, she won the prestigious Mimi Coertse Bursary competition. Magdalene continues her career as professional soprano and violist in Cape Town.
