Cellists
Anjulie de Vos is a classically trained cellist who received her B.Mus - degree at the University of Stellenbosch in 2001. She completed her studies under Magdalena Roux (University of Stellenbosch), Anmari van der Westhuizen (University of Stellenbosch) and Andreas Pozlberger (Bruckner Konservatorium Linz, Austria).
While still studying she performed regularly with the Cape Town Philhamonic Orchestra, Kwazulu Natal Philharmonic and St George's Chamber Orchestra. She has also performed and recorded with famous artists such as Stef Bos, Koos Kombuis, Valiant Swart, Louis Mahlanga, Heinz Winkler and the Springbok Nudegirls. Today Anjulie performs on a regular basis and teaches music at Somerset College and privately.
Anjulie was also one of the founding members of the popular cosmopolitan quintet, Zamar, in which she played cello and stick bass up to December 2006. She also composed many of the songs played and sung by Zamar. She now works as freelance cellist / bassist.

Babette Le Roux
Babette le Roux’s music interest andstudies started at the age of 7 with the local piano teacher in her small hometown next to the Vaal River. Pursuing cello lessons shortly after at the Conservatorium in Potchefstroom lead to her first tour at the age of 13 as soloist with the National Chamber Orchestra. Following various awards and prizes, she decided to immerse herself in music as a profession by enrolling for a B.Mus at the University of Stellebosch with Dalena Roux. After pursuing further post-graduate studies with Prof. Heidi Litschauer at the Mozarteum in the music mecca of Salzburg, Austria, she returned to take a position in the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra. She also completed her M.Mus degree at the University of Stellenbosch at the end of 2009. Babette has a keen interest in chamber music and has performed with many of South Africa’s foremost classical musicians. Her varied interests include involvement in community music projects to provide music education to under-privileged communities in Cape Town.

Dorette Roos is a classical cellist currently pursuing her Master of Music degree in performance at the University of Stellenbosch, where she is a student of Dalena Roux. Dorette spent a large part of 2009 in Salzburg, Austria, where she furthered her studies with Professor Heidi Litschauer at the Mozarteum University, which included various recitals and chamber music concerts.
In June 2007, Dorette graduated with a Bachelor of Music from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in the United States of America, where she studied primarily with Cathy Meints. At Oberlin Dorette also excelled in baroque cello and performed for National Public Radio with her baroque ensemble.
During her studies Dorette had the opportunity to play and lead various national and international orchestras. In September 2006, Dorette led the South African National Youth Orchestra that performed at the Beethoven Fest in Bonn, Germany. She was also a part of the Oberlin Conservatory Symphony Orchestra that performed in Carnegie Hall in January of 2007.
Most recently Dorette won the Edna Elphick cello prize at the University of Stellenbosch and in July 2009 attended master classes at the Neuberg Music Festival, Austria.
Dorette is a permanent member of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra since July 2008. |
Leana Alkema has finished her fourth and final year BMus degree at the University of Cape Town where she studied cello performance with Kristian Chernev (previously Anmari van der Westhuizen). She has won several prizes and awards. These include the Alfred Libochowitz Prize (2006, 2007, 2008) and the Ralph Nussbaum Chamber Music Award (2007). In 2007 and 2008 she was added to the Dean’s Merit List at UCT. Leana has performed across South Africa and abroad as soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player. She recently received master classes with world renowned Thomas Carroll (England), Alexander Baillie (Germany), Daniel Graff (Germany), Eugene Osadchy (America), Maria Kliegel (Germany) and Heidi Litschauer (Austria). She is planning to further her studies abroad in 2010.
Marelise Diener obtained a Masters Degree in cello under Peter Martens at Stellenbosch University in 2008. While studying at Stellenbosch University, she won several bursaries, such as the Hans Endler Prize, HA Molteno prize, JLM Franken prize, SAMRO prize and several merit bursaries.
Marelise has been part of a permanent ensemble for several years and performs regularly as a cellist for various others. She has attended several chamber music courses and festivals such as the Franschhoek Chamber Music Workshop and Festival and the International Chamber Music Festival at Stellenbosch University.
She obtained the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP) Bursary for oversees studies and recently returned from studying with Prof Eugene Osadchy at the University of North Texas (USA). There she was a member of the UNT Chamber Orchestra, as well as the Baroque Orchestra, Collegium, and received baroque cello lessons from Gyöngy Erődi. She has had master classes with Nikola Ruzevic, Heidi Litschauer, Cobus Swanepoel, Maria Kliegel and Angela Painter.
Marelise teaches full time at the Johnman Music School and Bloemhof Girls High in Stellenbosch.
